Let's dive into the fascinating stories behind historic buildings like Gedung Sate.

Gedung Sate

The Gedung Sate is a historic building in Bandung City located at Jalan Diponegoro No. 22. The building was constructed during the Dutch colonial era, from 1920 to September 1924, at a cost of around 6 million guilders. The design of Gedung Sate is the work of Dutch architect Ir. J. Gerber, influenced by traditional Nusantara and European architectural styles.

The Gedung Sate has a distinctive feature in the form of satay-shaped ornaments on its central tower, consisting of six circles symbolizing the building's construction cost. The building is also designed to face north, directly towards Mount Tangkuban Perahu. The architecture of Gedung Sate is a blend of Eastern and Western styles, with the front of the building featuring ornaments inspired by Hindu temples, while its tower resembles a Balinese temple.

The Gedung Sate not only has aesthetic value but also serves as a symbol of Bandung City's historical identity. On December 3, 1945, the building witnessed a significant event in Indonesian history when seven young men died defending the building against Gurkha troops. A monument was built in the building's courtyard to commemorate their struggle.

Today, the Gedung Sate serves as the Office of the Governor of West Java and is one of the city's tourist attractions. Visitors can appreciate the building's architectural beauty and learn about its history through the Gedung Sate Museum, equipped with digital technologies such as 4D projection, Augmented Reality (AR), and Virtual Reality (VR).
