This news article from Liputan6.com, titled "Ragunan Management's Excuse After Viral Condition of Jaguar Jalu: Not All Thin Animals Mean They Are Sick," discusses a viral TikTok video showing a jaguar named Jalu at Ragunan Zoo appearing thin and weak. This video sparked concern and discussion on social media.
Wahyudi Bambang, the Head of Public Relations for Ragunan, clarified that Jalu's thin condition is due to his very old age of 22 years, which is significantly older than the average lifespan of jaguars in the wild (12-15 years). Wahyudi expressed regret that the video was uploaded without understanding the full context and stressed that not all animals appearing thin are necessarily sick or neglected. He explained that elderly animals, much like humans, experience physical changes such as slower movement and decreased stamina. However, Ragunan ensures that senior animals remain active and receive intensive care based on animal welfare principles. Placing older animals in exhibit enclosures also aims to keep them visible, recognizable, and to honor their existence. The viral video was uploaded by the TikTok account @billa1717 and garnered thousands of comments and tens of thousands of likes from sympathetic netizens.
